This reminds me of a conversation-over-coffee that had with a US Army Colonel years ago. He told me that there are three reasons that a soldier might fail in a task. The soldier might lack the ability, but this is pretty rare. The soldier might lack training or education. He said, "We can fix that." Or the soldier might lack motivation. His eyes narrowed, he spoke more slowly and his pronunciation became more clipped, almost staccato, "We can fix that too." I think that I unconsciously put about 6" more between us and thought, yeah Colonel, I bet you can.

This was a very touching account. Thank you for sharing.

I'm not sure if you listened to Bari Wiess' most recent podcast episode where she had a roundtable about parenting, but there were a lot of similar themes—particularly that kids need boundaries. Honestly, it's one of the best ways to show you love them, and it gives them the traction they need to become happy, resilient adults.

Also, have you ever watched the show Kim's Convenience? It's a great show in general, but there's a particularly funny episode in season 1 where the father and the daughter's art teacher clash over parenting styles. The art teacher is so comically permissive that she never says the word "no" to her child. It's very funny: https://imdb.to/3NAiTWi

Wow. Reading this was touching, moving, and inspiring. From the way you told your story to how you have reinvented yourself and come full circle to the attention and care these kids receive... I learned a lot about just how important structures and guidance are to creating a well-adjusted child. Will definitely get my hands on the documentary. Thank you for sharing!

Thank you for this. I wish this school great success.

I'm interested in the juxtaposition of this article and the William Deresiewicz piece on Bari Weiss platform today. Do you think you and he contradict each other or overlap?

Both Russia and Ukraine suffer from the destruction of so much human and social capital under Lenin and Stalin. Just establishing law and order, prerequisite for a functioning democracy, will take several generations. We need to be realistic here.
